Mosquitoes – Not Just A Nuisance!

We’ve all tried to enjoy a summer evening outside, only to be discouraged by hordes of biting mosquitoes. These pests can be a bit more difficult to effectively control than others, but the extra effort required is necessary. In addition to being a nuisance, mosquitoes can lower the value of your property. Nobody wants a back yard that can’t be enjoyed, or a porch that can’t be relaxed on. More importantly, while your chances of being infected by a bite are slim, there are a number of West Nile cases each year.

So what can you do, short of amassing a stockpile of insect repellent? This may keep the bloodsucking pests away, if you don’t mind smelling like a chemical factory, and other products such as candles and coils that give off a repellent smoke can also be effective in establishing a mosquito-free perimeter in your back yard. But to fully solve the problem, you must look to the source.

Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so do your best to eliminate such areas from your property. Half-full buckets, old tires, unused fish ponds, and clogged gutters are all potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Typically, females travel up to 35 meters from a breeding site for a blood meal–aka you. By removing these unnecessary sites, maintaining swimming pools, and treating large ponds and drainage areas with appropriate pesticides, you can drastically reduce the local mosquito population. Keep in mind, however, that mosquito control is an ongoing process. Some species develop from egg to adult in a week or less, meaning that the population is renewed frequently.

At Brasure’s, we offer several regular mosquito management services, as well as treatments for special occasions. However, there are a number of additional steps you can take to fill your summer evenings with more fun and fewer mosquito bites:

  • Light your deck/patio with General Electric yellow “Bug Lights” rather than ordinary incandescent lights, which attract mosquitoes and other insects.
  • Place a large fan on your deck/patio to discourage mosquitoes from flying in your direction.
  • Screen in your deck/patio to keep out not just mosquitoes, but quite a few other pests. Just be sure to repair holes and tears.

It is important to note, particularly if you live in a development, that your neighbors’ mosquitoes will not respect property boundaries. Community-wide efforts are much more effective in managing mosquitoes than going at it alone, and such efforts might be vital, especially in the case of a neighborhood bordering a large pond or river.
